There’s more to man’s best friend than meets the eye!

If you’re a dog lover then you probably think you know everything there is to know about our furry friends. But, there may be some hidden secrets that our canine companions have been keeping from us. In fact, you may be surprised at some of the interesting things you probably didn’t  know about your pooch. Here are 10 things you probably didn’t know about dogs.

1. Dogs can see colour
Forget what you’ve heard, dogs are not colour blind! Yes, the colour range they can see is limited compared to what the human eye can see but rather than just black and white, the canine colour spectrum consists mostly of yellows, blues, and violets.

2. Dogs have super powers
Ok, so you probably know that dogs have an incredible sense of smell but did you know that it’s basically super power level? That’s right, a dog can smell things 10,000 to 100,000 times greater than humans can!

3. Dogs have a unique ‘fingerprint’
Just like humans can be identified from their unique fingerprints dogs can be identified by their unique nose prints! Look closely and you will see lines and ridge patterns on their cute little noses. If you’re serious about keeping track of your pup why not ask your vet about recording your dog’s nose print?

4. Dogs sweat differently than we do
Did you know dogs don’t sweat through their skin like we do? Instead, they release heat through their paw pads and by panting.

5. Their bite IS bigger than their bark!
You know the saying; “his bark is bigger than his bite”. That’s not true for dogs as a dog’s mouth can put down an average of 90KG of pressure when biting. In fact, some dogs can apply up to 200 KG of pressure!

6. Dogs don’t feel guilt

All those guilty dog pictures you’ve seen online don’t mean squat! Your pet pooch may get jealous, but research shows that those puppy dog eyes are not a sign of guilt but are just the way we interpret a dog’s reaction to being scolded.

7. Dog urine can corrode metal

Your dog might have another super power you weren’t aware of. Oddly, the acids in dog urine can corrode metal. That’s right, letting your dog do his business on a nearby lamp post might not be the best idea after all!

8. Dogs dream just like us!

If you’ve ever watched your dog running in his sleep then it will come as no surprise to you that dogs dream in a very similar way to us. Dogs have the same brain wave patterns as humans while they are asleep. so they dream just like we do.

9. Dogs can fall in love

You might joke about your dog having a boyfriend or girlfriend but they don’t call it puppy love for nothing! Studies have found that a dog’s brain releases oxytocin - the love hormone - when it interacts with humans and dogs, just the same as a human brain does when we hug or kiss.

10. Dogs can smell disease

Dogs have an incredible ability to recognise the smell of a range of organic compounds that show the human body isn’t working as it should. That means that your dog can actually diagnose cancer, diabetes and the early signs of an epileptic seizure. Amazing!
